Fallen by Lauren Kate

Fallen (Fallen, #1)Fallen by Lauren Kate
Hardcover, First, 452 pages
Published December 8th 2009 by Delacorte Press

This was taken from goodreads.com/jess_readerwriter, I wrote the review freely and I apologize if the reviews are not written in a professional manner.

Synopsis: There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

My rating: 2 stars of 5
Boring
Annoying characters
Cliche, but I really just don't want to call it "cliche". . . .

So, I've been putting this book off. Back when it originally came out, not sure when, but awhile ago, I only wanted to read it because the chick on the cover looked like Amy Lee of the band Evanescence and I was obsessed with that band. At the time, I didn't buy it. I was bored of the jacket cover synopsis and tired of the whole "even if it kills her. . . ." line that all the synopses these days end with.

Half Price Books had it. We all know how I am with that place. I bought the book.

Lucinda Price is going to a school for kids who pretty much are very very bad and get arrested for stupid crap. The book beats around the bush and doesn't necessarily tell you what Luce did to get put in there. On her first day of school, she notices the most beautiful guy she's ever seen. Daniel Grigori (Who, of course, is the only guy she can see in the crowd of people, yada yada yada). But Daniel is keeping his distance, flips her off when he sees her, and stays away. Cam, a cutie patootie tries to get with Luce, swooning her. A series of occurances happen at the school, a falling statue, more "shadows" that she keeps referring to. She finally speaks of her past (Which I had to give props to the author because it wasn't as cliche as I expected it to be) and her worst nightmares catch up to her, making a reenactment at the school of what had happened to her before. Daniel finally gets close to her but always muttering something weird. He also always leaves abruptly. Then, while Luce tries to push Cam away, the real plot thickens when Daniel gets involved.

This book was slightly a disappointment. I expected it to be something dark, different. Which, indeed, it was different. Not trying to spoil, but there are fallen angels in this book. Don't really think that was much of a spoiler but. . . . back to my point: The whole plot was not what I expected. The prologue, yeah, it was a giveaway, but that was the point, correct? I guess I'm disappointed because I thought it'd be a lot better than it was. For all the hype, I thought of this as an average, slightly edgier cliche version of every other book. Sure, I know it's hard to get away from the cliches and I'm not saying this book is bad because of it. I'm saying, it was a little predictable at some parts and I just didn't get excited during the action scenes because they almost weren't there.

The ending action scene was thrilling, yes. There was a battle, obviously. Like most books, they have to end with a big bang. The only thing that bothered me was that we didn't get to even see the big battle. We get to see into Luce's head. Some major events happened but she wasn't there during the battle. The action scenes she was involved in were short and it seemed like a quick rap up.

Pretty much, my thoughts on the book with no sugar added: I expected more. I didn't really get the whole "dark and sexy" aspect of this book. But, maybe I was just bored because I just recently got done reading Hush, Hush? I finished it fast and it was entertaining but I don't feel like it lived up to the reputation it has.

I still, most definitley, will read the next book, though!
